A visit to Noirmoutiermeans a visit to one of its many beaches. Holidaymakers can choose from the beaches of barbâtre, Guérinière, l’épine or l’herbaudière. Noirmoutier is also famous for its charming Bois de la chaise, a lovely walk. Along the way, amid the pines, coves punctuate the walk, offering superb views over the Baie de Bourgneuf. What’s more, those who wish to do so can take the path to the pretty Plage des Dames with its white wooden cabins, or continue further south to Plage des Sableaux. But Noirmoutier isn’t just defined by its beaches. The island also boasts a multitude of salt marshes, some of which can be visited.

Family activities in Noirmoutier

Family vacationers to Noirmoutier can enjoy the beach, but not only that. If they wish, they can spend a pleasant, enchanting moment on the Ile aux Papillons, a tropical greenhouse housing a variety of colorful species, each more beautiful than the last.
To this visit we can also add that of the Château de Noirmoutier. This historic monument, built in the late 12th century, now houses a museum. The second floor of the château houses a permanent exhibition. It traces the history of the island through its archaeological and prehistoric sites, as well as the history of the château from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The second and third floors feature temporary exhibitions. The tour ends with a superb panoramic view from the keep.

Getting to the island of Noirmoutier from our campsite in Saint Jean de Monts

There are several ways to get to the island of Noirmoutier from our 4-star campsite in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. For such an unusual experience, opt for the Passage du gois. This route can only be taken at low tide, giving the illusion of driving on water. Be sure to check the tide times before taking it. However, there is another alternative that allows you to reach the island of Noirmoutier at any time of day. To do this, you need to cross the Noirmoutier bridge. This is located in Fromentine, less than 25 km from our campsite in St Hilaire de Riez.

How to visit Noirmoutier

There are several options for exploring the island of Noirmoutier. Once you’ve crossed the Gois or the Noirmoutier bridge by car or motorcycle, you can reach the different parts of the island you wish to visit. You can also visit Noirmoutier by bike, thanks to the 83 km of cycle paths. There’s no need to bring your own bikes, as there are no fewer than 11 rental companies on site.
